Pen Pal letters between Emma Hutchinson and Katie Newton during quarantine.

Coronavirus Journal Entry #5

Junior Katie Newton exchanges Pen Pal letters

During quarantine I think the hardest thing for a lot of us is the social aspect – or antisocial aspect to be more accurate.

As teenagers we tend to want to spend more time with our friends, which is natural as our brain develops. A lot of us, including myself, have resorted to technology – as we should! But I think there’s something to be said about other kinds of communication, since the most beneficial, in person contact has been stripped away from most of the world.

So, my friend and I started writing each other pen pal letters. It seems cheesy, yet receiving a physical piece of mail is much more exciting than a text (not to say we shouldn’t keep using technology, though).

We ask each other questions such as, “If you could relive any day what would it be and why?” or “What’s your favorite song to sing in the shower?” or more complex like “If you could create a music festival what would the theme be and which artists would come?” They’re lighthearted questions but they help me think of fun things to look forward to and recall some of my favorite memories. Sometimes we leave other little notes or handmade gifts in the envelope and I’m always excited to read my friend’s responses and answer their questions.

This is just one glimpse at my quarantine, but it’s a small piece of positivity that I would recommend to anyone else who wants to try it.
