About 50 Independent Living Skills students from three schools participated in Rio Americano’s version of the Special Olympics last week.
Aside from Rio, Mira Loma High School and Laurel Ruff School participated in front of packed bleachers.
The event was organized by senior Ady Beloian as her Civitas senior project.
“I wanted to do this event for my senior project because as an athlete myself, I have always had a passion for working with athletes with developmental differences,” Beloian said. “Interning with NorCal Special Olympics inspired me to pursue my goal of hosting my own Special Olympics Track and Field Event for other high school athletes.”
Participants got more than medals from the event.
“The ILS students got from the event a sense of community, connection, and pride,” Beloian said. “They also experienced competitive spirit, and had a tremendous amount of fun.”
