There are no plans to begin construction on the long-awaited stadium improvements at Rio Americano in the near future, the San Juan Unified School District said.
Although voters approved the district’s Measure P, a $950 million bond for facilities work, in November, accessing those funds will take time.
District spokesperson Raj Rai said that “the topic continues to be discussed,” but that there are no concrete plans to add the bleachers and lights that would allow Rio to host proper home football games.
“At this time, the district has not yet utilized new bond funds from Measure P, as we are still working through projects funded by the previous bond measure,” she said.
The Facilities Master Plan, which will determine the district’s highest-priority projects to benefit from the bond money, is still under development and will be completed in the spring, Rai said.
Construction on the updated stadium will first require a CEQA review (California Environmental Quality Act), a process which takes about eight to 10 months, “Light the Field” committee leader Deborah Aguilar said.
