Chase Dinaburg, a three-sport varsity athlete for Rio Americano High School, will compete in discus and shotput in the Meet of Champions at American River College on Saturday.
Dinaburg, a junior, leads the Capital Athletic League in discus with a season-best 144.3 feet. He is second in shot put with a best of 44.8 feet.
He credits his success to his trainer Mike Macellari.
Dinaburg was an all-league defensive lineman for Rio’s football team, contributing to their first playoff win in years. He came off the bench as a power forward to help the basketball team reach deep in the playoffs.
He hopes to play football in college but is focusing on throwing events now as he prepares for a meet that draws the best from around Northern California.
“It’s peaceful when I get in the ring; it’s just me versus me,” he said. “In basketball, there’s a guy around me or next to me or a guy I have to hit, but in discus, it’s solely my emotions.”
