Being one of the first sports to start up again after a year of quarantine, the girls varsity tennis team had a successful season.  

The team had a record of 9-1, almost undefeated and losing only once to Christain Brothers by a close game of 4-5. The girls also were named League Co-Champions alongside Christian Brothers who finished with the same record.  

The team had to adjust quickly with matches starting only a week after tryouts. COVID protocol had to be taken into account; masks were mandatory at all times during practice and hand sanitizer was applied on and off the court. 

The girls took proper action and continued on with their season without a case.  

Junior Sydney Gerety was ecstatic to find out that the season would actually be happening in early March.

“I was so excited for the season to start, especially after not being able to play last year,” Gerety said. “It was a little challenging with all the new rules regarding COVID, but overall I was just excited to play.” 

The team had to fight for each of their matches to get the results they wanted. With one of their first matches being against Vista Del Lago, the girls started off with a close win of 5-4.  

Vista Del Lago and the team have always been neck and neck throughout the years playing against each other. The rivalry is strong between the two, but the girls managed to come out on top this year.   

Throughout the season the league consisted of schools such as Vista Del Lago, El Camino, Mira Loma, Del Campo, and Christain Brothers.  

The team quickly became recognized as one of the best by not losing a single match until the later portion of the season.  

With the idea of being League Champions formulating in the teams near future, the girls became closer with each other and created a great team connection. 

“I think we got closer than we were, just because the effort to get to where we did took a lot of teamwork,” said sophomore Maya Fornera.  

With meeting up after practices and out of school the team became one and cheered each other along the way.  

Many players returned from previous seasons, making the connections stronger, but still allowing newer players to be welcomed in without hesitation. 

One of the best aspects of the season were the practices with head coach Gina Costello and assistant coaches Lisa Witt and Sarah Ketsdever. The practices were still fun by practicing with and against one another and occasionally playing team games.  

With games and practices coming to an end, the team had to say goodbye to four of the seniors that played, Emma Chally, Tillie Rubin, Libby Synder, and Erica Yu. 

It was a great season to finish out on and the team wishes them the best in college next year. 

The team only has a short break over the summer until their season comes up again starting in late August.  

“I’m excited for next season because I will [have] most likely improved and it will be exciting to meet and play with everyone again,” said Freshman Isabel Sahs.
