They owned the the new million dollar field. No one could take this moment. Their running game was unparalleled. No one could score when they were on the field. In fact, no one could get on the field.

They were a pair of Killdeers with a nest in the east end zone. Covered by the national press, the birds were the biggest story of the year, but they were not the only one.

Rio’s 22 varsity squads combined to produce 4 league titles and 12 Sac-Joaquin Section titles. Many of the programs who failed to have successful seasons have much promise for years to come.

The men on the gridiron experienced their share of struggles throughout the season. However, with a blowout victory in their final game against El Camino (highlighted by a brawl that concluded the game early), the Raiders will look to continue their transition into the new league next year.

Young programs such as girls lacrosse and are finding success despite being formed just three years ago. Sophomores Anika Regoski and Anna Swanson paved the way for a young team that is only going to improve their 5-9 record.

Boys’ soccer was one of the most successful teams of the year, finishing with a 16-4-2 record and going deep into the playoffs. Lead by Emmanuel Rey with 22 goals, the Raiders won twice to reach the sections semi-final where they lost to Central Valley. No other varsity team at the school has reached the heights these players did this year.

Girl’s soccer found similar success to their fellow boys thanks to seniors Camille Lidster, Maleah Evans and freshman Abby Brewster. Finishing with a 12-4-2 record, the Raiders tore through their division, finishing 9-1-2 in league play. In the postseason, they could not get past St. Francis in the semi final, falling short exactly where the men’s team did.

Last but certainly not least basketball went on one of the most magical runs of any team. Early in the season, they went on a magical run to win the Jack Scott tournament.

After finishing the regular season 22-9, seniors Jake Paxton and Jonah Roth headed a tear through the early rounds of the playoffs. After bouncing River Valley in the first round, the Raiders pulled off one of the biggest upsets in program history, defeating Rocklin 54-46 to move into the section semis. They finally were stopped by one of the best teams in the state in St. Mary’s.

Going forward, Raider sports is shaping out to be in fine shape with the new field, young teams and much excitement.
