Swim Team 2018

A fifteen year legacy: that is what rests on Coaches Taylor Moore, Justin Smith, and Hannah Torres. For 15 consecutive years, the swim team has won the CAL league championships, dominating in every division in recent history.

In the wake of Tyson Frenn’s departure from the team last year, Moore now bears that torch on his shoulders as head coach, using his experience from last year to guide the team along with the support of the new JV Coach Justin Smith and Assistant Coach Hannah Torres, an alumni of the team currently attending American River College.

The team has a strong history, not only in the CAL(Capital Athletic League) league, but in sections and states as well. In the previous season had 27 swimmers entered in sections with several competing in finals.

The points from finals would start to rack up, and by the end of the meet the jv girls placed 19th, varsity women placed 3rd, jv boys tied for 11th, and varsity boys placed 4th.

Seven swimmers would even go on to qualify for the state competition: Rachel Choi,  Jackson Cudmore, Halladay Kinsey, Lizzie Menzmer, Kailee Nabeta, and Tina Reuter.

Several of the swimmers were juniors, giving them another chance to improve and push themselves even further this season.

In states the Varsity Girls medley relay set a new record for the team of 1:44.87 with only juniors, as well as placing 4th overall in the state.

Unfortunately the current season hasn’t been as productive as possible due to weather limitations, there have been multiple practice cancellations and even postponing the Casa Roble meet due to lightning and temperature.

Senior Alex Giyenko said “I’m looking forward to sections and winning a lot of swim meets, I’ve been on the team for 4 years of grueling practices and working for the team and its sinking in now that I’m getting close to the end of it”

Junior Everett Turley had a more positive opinion saying “Swim team is pretty chill, its a great experience even though I’m one of the slowest on the team, even with water polo I can’t get enough of the water”

Even with weather interrupting on some days, every day they can, the team is either practicing or competing at a meet, with friday practices mandatory for all swimmers on the team.

With Moore at the helm and the new coaching staff by his side, along with the amount of strong swimmers returning to the team Moore said ”I am looking forward to the upcoming season! This year, we will have a strong and competitive team. We have the ability to win our 16th straight CAL league championship, 2 Section Championship Titles and a State Championship.”
