It may be Valentine’s Day weekend, but nobody will be feeling the love when the basketball team visits Jesuit Saturday night.

The cross-the-street rivalry game tips off at 6 p.m. Rio 9-13 record hopes for a win. Jesuit 20-4 record to bounce back from a 60-62 loss to league rival Sheldon.

Last year Jesuit defeated Rio 81-68. Although Jesuit has won the last three match-ups against Rio, Raider players and fans see hope for a win.

“It’s been close my freshman and sophomore year, and last year we let it get away,” said senior Matt Lyon. “So hopefully this year is a toss up.”

Even though Jesuit has a better record, there is no doubt the Rowdy Raiders will inspire and motivate everyone on and off the court.

Tonight Jesuit is holding a tournament against Monterey Trail. It is their senior night, and some Rio fans hope it takes up some of their energy before Saturday.

If Jesuit brings its A game, the Raiders will have their hands full stopping a potent offense that has been averaging 65 points a game.

Senior Danny Miller is realistic but hopeful about the game.

“Last year we were just outplayed,” he said. “This year Jesuit’s team is one of the best in Sacramento. It’s going to be a good game and hard-fought. I have faith that we will put up a fight and pull off the upset.”

Lyon, the star point guard, can hopefully lead the team to a win.

Lyon averages 11 points per game and this is his third year on varsity. He has scored 713 career points.

“This year I would like to change our focus on defense and what we game planned,” said Lyon. “And this year, I believe it will be high energy and a fun game like always.”
