On Oct. 15, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce made their first public debut as a couple. Travis Kelce is
a professional football player for the Kansas City Chiefs and Taylor Swift, well, she’s an extremely successful singer-songwriter who has acquired a massive fanbase throughout her career. When Swift came to one of Kelce’s football games, the NFL made sure to briefly show Swift on camera any chance they got. The NFL is clearly exploiting Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s relationship in order to draw in more football fans.
However, the NFL should stick to football and reduce Swift’s screen time at games.
One game, the NFL showed Swift on camera 17 times. They also changed their bio on X, formerly known as Twitter, to the “NFL (Taylor’s Version),” a reference to Swift. Her recent rerecorded albums included “Taylor’s Version” after the original title.
The NFL’s response to Taylor Swift simply attending a football game caught the attention of many media outlets and has blown up on social media.
“Saturday Night Live” even did a whole skit about it, where a sports analyst says, “So far no sign of blondie; starting to wonder why I am even here.”
The skit comments on how the NFL has spent way too much time discussing Taylor Swift and not football.
Fans of Swift have tuned in to football games just hoping to see her on camera, demonstrating how the NFL is simply using Swift to increase ratings.
Broadcasters have even made references to Swift, like after Kelce Scored a touchdown and Ian Eagle said, “Kelce finds a blank space for the score.”
Even on Travis and Jason Kelce’s podcast, “New Heights,” Travis said, “They are overdoing it a little bit for sure.”
The NFL appeals to a select crowd which limits their viewers. According to writer Jessa
Morris, 73% of NFL viewers are men over the age of 50. Yet 52% of Taylor Swift fans are women. This means the NFL is using Swift to try to expand its market to more people and gain more viewers.
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are in a private relationship and the NFL should focus on football, not their relationship.
