The large camphor tree in front of the cafeteria will be cut down over spring break next week.
In an email, Principal Cliff Kelley said the the San Juan district need to remove the tree because of damage to the sewer and drainage system.
The Mirada reported in March on flooding that occurs in heavy rain because tree roots have clogged drain pipes.
Noting the irony of sending his email while Earth Day events were taking place nearby, Kelly said, he plans to offset the loss of the tree.
“I have been working with a couple of our environmental clubs and the district to obtain the district’s list of approved trees, so that we can place a couple of new trees on campus at a different location,” he wrote.
Meanwhile, he wrote that he is working a way to provide shade in the area where many students each lunch.
