Mathletes had one of their best finishes of the season in a competition at Franklin High School March 13, taking second place for the first time since December.
In a field of 15 teams from throughout the region, Rio missed first place by two points after racking up 68 points. Points are scored by each of the five team members competing in three events to solve math problems.
“When we started recording our scores we were actually really excited because this is the first time each member scored more than 10 points,” said senior Olivia Huang, co-president of the club. “The questions are very hard. Out of the six questions most people usually only get two correct. This time we all got four or more.”
Competing with Huang were senior Logan Henningsen, junior Logan Freeland, sophomore Maximus Jackson and freshman Joongse Kim. The team is coached by Svetlana Popov.
The team next competes at Rio on April 10.
