Voters in the San Juan Unified School District on Tuesday handily approved Measure P, the “Classroom Repair Measure,” which will raise $950 million for district schools for major facilities work.
Funds for Measure P, which passed with 58% of the vote*, will come from a nominal property tax increase and are expected to be distributed based on the district’s newly approved Facilities Master Plan.
The plan calls for the construction of a new “Student Union” at Rio Americano. Building a new pool as well as new tennis courts where the portables are currently located are also proposed. The current tennis court location would house new classrooms and a STEAM lab.
The Facilities Master Plan includes provisions for bleachers, stadium lighting, and a press box for a long-awaited proper football field, one of the main requests of students and parents in the development of the new plan.
Across the district, the money will be used for lead and asbestos removal, roof and plumbing repairs and updating fire safety systems.
Despite the passage of the bond, SJUSD estimates $3.5 billion in total facilities needs.
Similar bond measures in the Sacramento City Unified, Elk Grove Unified, and Folsom Cordova Unified School Districts all passed. Prop 2, a $10 billion statewide bond for additional school facilities improvements, was also approved.
