2020 Nobel Winner Rice One of Many Notable Rio Alumni
Charles M. Rice, who last week became the first Nobel Prize winner to graduate from Rio Americano, is not the only famous alumnus of the Sacramento high school.
In fact, during his four years at Rio, Rice (’70), now a professor of virology at Rockefeller University in New York and winner of the 2020 prize for Medicine or Physiology, would have at least passed in the hallways three Olympic gold medal swimmers, a future U.S. Representative and a future Playboy playmate and girlfriend of Hugh Hefner.
This despite the fact that when Rice arrived as a freshman the school was only three years old, fields were mostly mud pits and some buildings were still under construction.
Here is a partial list of other notable alumni of Rio, compiled from Wikipedia:

It’s weird to think that so many famous people could have gone to the same high school that I go to now. When you think of other people with status you always see them as they are now and not where they came from. This article shows that everyone starts in the same place for the most part. If you work hard you can achieve jobs that seem unobtainable.

I think that it is extremely interesting to look back on how people you used to go to high school with, and maybe even shared a few classes with, become famous or do something amazing.

I think it is very interesting that so many famous people went to Rio that I never knew about. I think the funniest example of this is Barbie Benton, Hugh Hefner’s girlfriend. I had heard of the trumpet player once or twice before but i was able to go to their Wikipedia page and look at what he did. I also found it very interesting how many professional sports players came out of Rio that I had never heard of before. I also had no idea that there were three people who went to the olimpics for swimming from rio, and I found that very interesting.
