Maydoon: Not fancy, just great Persian meals

The restaurant Maydoon, situated in Midtown Sacramento, has become one of my favorites in the past few months. It is a modern Persian restaurant located on 16th Street with a bright and welcoming interior. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by a smiling host. It is very clean and well-kept, but not extremely fancy. There are nice flowers on the tables, beautiful paintings on the walls, and many windows that let in the sunlight, giving the restaurant a bright atmosphere. I always feel welcome in this restaurant.

The hosts, waiters, and servers are friendly, professional, and quick, which makes eating there feel like a treat. They take your order and bring the bill quickly, but never make it seem like a rush. They were well-staffed, and we had no problems at all with the service.

Since it is located in Midtown, parking can be a huge pain since there is no parking garage close so I recommend going on weekdays, but even on weekends, it is well worth the wait. I usually have to park a few blocks away, but it is normally no longer than a 10-minute walk. It is close to a park, so if I have to wait for our table to be ready, I sometimes walk around it.

Maydoon offers many items and dishes familiar to me but also many unique ones: hummus, pita, and many types of kabobs, but also Fessen Joon (also known as Fessenjan). My dad got the Fessen Joon, which is chicken cooked in a sauce made of pomegranate seeds and walnuts served over saffron rice, and it was exceptional. The sauce was extremely unique to my palate, but I am so glad I tried a bit of it. The pomegranate seeds gave the sauce a tangy and sweet flavor, and the walnuts really elevated it by adding richness and a discernible nuttiness.

Everything I have had from here was amazing, but my favorite thing to get is the “Taste of Maydoon” with white, chicken meat. It comes with a bit of everything: salad, rice, must khair (a creamy yogurt sauce), hummus, and pita. The chicken tastes very fresh and is seasoned extremely well, and even when I order the white meat it is incredibly tender and juicy.

The salad is also exceptional for something so simple. It has romaine lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, and onions, but the best part is the homemade dressing. It is creamy but not too thick and is one of the best salad dressings I have ever had. They even sell 16-ounce jars of it for $6 each. The entrees are a bit on the expensive side, around $20 to $30, but the huge portions and great tastes make it well worth the money spent.  These dishes and many others highlight Maydoon’s great flavors and high quality.

Overall, I would 100% recommend Maydoon to anyone looking for a good restaurant to try and is not in a hurry. It stands out for its great service, ambiance, and bold flavors. Maydoon is a perfect place for dinner any night of the week, with family or friends.
