The Marvel Cinematic Universe is one of the biggest influencers of cinema in the 21st century. From comics to movies, I’ve been a fan of Marvel since I was a kid. Spanning 34 movies over almost two decades, the MCU has many hits, leading to the question, what are the best movies? This list explores my personal top five best Marvel movies.
Thor: Ragnarok
One of the funniest movies in the MCU is “Thor: Ragnarok.” This movie follows Thor, attempting to save his planet. “Thor: Ragnarok” redefines Thor as a character. Stripped of his hammer and throne, he learns that his power comes not from weapons but from within, making this a turning point in his story. The film features tons of humor and entertaining character dynamics such as that between Thor, Valkyrie, and Korg, making light of the dire situation. Most jokes land, and this movie manages to expertly balance humor with action and drama.
Guardians of the Galaxy Franchise
More contenders for the funniest Marvel movies are the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films. The trilogy is littered with humor, drama, and action. The films explore heavy subjects and the concept of family, while also maintaining a lighthearted and laughable script. Each character has quirks that make them lovable and compelling. Some of the funniest bits from the film are any scenes with Drax, as well as the quips and banter between the main cast. All three movies hit, with none feeling bland.
Spider-Man: No Way Home
One of the most heart wrenching films in the MCU is “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” Serving as the conclusion to the Spider-man trilogy, this movie is filled with Peter Parker’s emotional turmoil. On the brighter side, it’s packed with nostalgic moments for Spider-Man fans. This movie brings back the two previous Spider-Men, along with Willem Dafoe’s wonderful Green Goblin performance, a treat that fans love. Peter Parker’s growth through the consequences of his own actions culminating in him resolving to be the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man despite his personal loss is a true Spider-Man story. The ending serves as a bittersweet conclusion to Peter’s easy life while leaving room for many more Spider-Man stories to unfold in the MCU.
Doctor Strange
Though often overlooked, “Doctor Strange” deserves a spot on this list. This movie does so many things right, from storytelling, to action, to character growth, there’s something to love in every corner. The visuals in this film are absolutely stunning, especially the mirror dimension and the confrontation with Dormammu at the end. The film’s fights are insane, using a mix of sorcery and hand to hand combat to produce an engaging choreography with a lot to offer. One of my personal favorite parts of this movie is the theme of Ego vs. Selflessness, seen through Stephen Strange’s character growth from a self-centered neurosurgeon to the sorcerer supreme. Doctor Strange learns to set aside his ego to serve the greater good, sold by Benedict Cumberbatch’s performance.
Avengers: Infinity War
To no one’s surprise, on this list is Avengers: Infinity War. Many consider this to be the best Marvel movie out of all of them. Nearly twenty movies culminating into one action-packed duology with Endgame is bound to go out with a bang. The film is nuanced, with Thanos as a complex villain in his motivation for wiping out half of existence. “The movie’s high stakes, massive battles, and shocking ending keep audiences engaged. Not only is this film drama-heavy, it’s a hoot for viewers too. This film has a lot of humor, especially in Thor’s banter with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Ultimately, it’s no wonder that such a monumental film would make this list.
