Rio Americano is renowned for its excellent band program, but they would not be where they are without a strong director. The powerhouse behind this school’s musical success is none other than Joshua Murray.
Rio Americano’s beloved band director has been teaching here for 26 years. Recently, he won the Paul Shaghoian award, which is given to California’s Jazz Educator of the Year.
This award is named after an incredible jazz educator from California who unfortunately passed away at 46 while still working. Now the Paul Shaghoian award is given annually to a California director who shows excellence in jazz education and performance. The award was recognized on Feb. 1.
Despite having won this award and several others, Murray does not find them to be a big deal. Instead he focuses on his students.
“I have really fantastic students who are really very good musicians, but also more importantly very kind, thoughtful people. I really just enjoy being around them,” Murray said. “I love seeing the cooperation in the classroom to create and achieve something greater than the individuals.”
Murray’s own experience in band growing up is what led him to become a teacher. He started his musical journey playing in his middle school band, and has loved it ever since.
“I had some really, really great teachers growing up and I really admired what they did and it seemed like they were happy.” Murray said. “And I identify with high school kids, so I like teaching this age group.”
Murray got his education at The New School in New York City, and then continued his education at UC Davis when he moved to California. He only taught at one other school before Rio, and Rio has become very important to him.
Not only is teaching at Rio his career, but it has become an avenue for him to connect with others. Through helping students, he finds joy in his work.
“I’ve made a life here. I live in the neighborhood [and] sent my kids here. They’re grown now,” Murray said. “I’ve been teaching here for a long time and it’s a second home. I love this school.”

This is an awesome accomplishment for an awesome teacher. People who work hard at their craft deserve the recognition and awards. In life, people who work hard deserve their respective awards and prizes. I am glad that Mr. Murray got his.
