Every year club rush is a chance for Rio students to tap into their creative sides.
With 52 clubs offered this year, there is likely a club that can cater to just about any special interest. Club rush took place at lunch in September.
Some students’ clubs are solely for fun, or a good place to meet friends, such as Taylor Swift Club or Climbing Club. Others focus more on activism and community service, like Go Green Club and Mental Health Club.
Some students work with organizations to help make their clubs the best they can be. One club that does this works with the American River Parkway Foundation Outdoor Charter and works to pick up trash and remove invasive species along the American River.
What made you decide to start the club?
“We both love Taylor Swift. It is what we bonded over and helped us become friends,” co-presidents Piage Saumure and MJ Vaughn said.
“We both play rugby and thought it was time the school had a club,” Rugby Club co-presidents Lauren McQuoid and Shea Enochian said.
Women in STEM Club president and founder Gianna Dobrescu said, “I am going to go into the STEM field and am very passionate about STEM jobs.”
What do you hope to accomplish in your club?
“We want to meet other people who share our interests,” Saumure said.
“We are Civ seniors, and this is our civ project,” McQuoid and Enochian said. “All proceeds at the end of the season will go towards the Women’s Sports Foundation. We also plan to have fundraisers.”
“I hope to get to know people and inform students of possible career paths and what it means to be in STEM,” Dobrescu said.
“I hope to provide a place where students can express their creative side,” Film Production Club co-president Naya Winn said.

It is so cool to see all of the different clubs that people created this year that can fit in with anyone’s interests.

I was very surprised at the amount of clubs that people had come up with! I didn’t expect to see that almost all the clubs had at least 15-20 names on the sheet. It was awesome. There were clubs for everyone.
