Varsity Girls Soccer Coach Has Done It All

She’s an Athletic Director, teacher, coach, loving wife, mother of three and her name is Jennifer Smiley. She attended Rio when she was in highschool, but her life here did not end when she graduated.

Mrs. Smiley is happily married and has three kids. The oldest is Katelyn, she is four years old, her second child, Jackson, is two years old and the youngest is named Brooklyn.

Smiley was born and raised here in Sacramento and attended only San Juan Unified schools. She was, and still is, a very active athlete.

“I began soccer, swimming and martial arts at four years old. I received my first black belt at nine years old in taekwondo, aikido, jujitsu, kickboxing and my highest level was a second degree in Shotokan Karate,” said Smiley. “I’ve also played almost every sport in between.”

When it came down to decision time, Smiley decided to focus on soccer.

“I played four years of varsity soccer here at Rio,” said Smiley.

Smiley went on to receive a scholarship to play Division One soccer at University of Pacific in Stockton, California.

After graduating from college, she began working as an EMT for a private ambulance company. In 2008, she became the head varsity soccer coach here at Rio and began teaching physical education at Barrett Middle School.

Not only did she begin teaching physical education at here in 2014, but she’s also the Athletic Director. Juggling these three jobs can be difficult sometimes, but she’s always loved doing them.

“My favorite part of the job is seeing students become kind, respectful, responsible and successful members of society,” said Smiley.

In her limited free-time. Smiley loves playing soccer, working out and spending time with her family.

Smiley has made so many memories over her years here, while both attending and teaching.

“One of my favorite memories was when our girls soccer team won our third section title in a row,” said Smiley. “To be able to celebrate that accomplishment was truly an honor and something they worked very hard for.”

Smiley has done and accomplished so much here at Rio. From her sports-filled days as a kid to her super busy days as a Rio alum, she never fails to enjoy giving back to the high school community.
